Seeking Adam in Ireland

I’ve always wanted to visit Ireland. Firstly, because I’m part Irish and secondly, I believe my future husband is there. He just doesn’t know it yet. His name is Adam and one day he’s going to bump into me on the street on his gypsy horse or knock over my wine in a pub while walking past with his Irish Wolfhound on return from his Irish castle and say ‘Madam I’m Adam’ which is “Madam I’m Adam” backwards. And he’ll look like Cillian Murphy . . . just taller. I’ll have to move to Ireland and live in his castle[…]

Volcano pony trekking in Iceland

In June 2014, I travelled to the Nordic island of Iceland with a friend to ride Icelandic horses in the countryside and up into the volcanic mountains that dominate the landscape through a company called Eld.Hestar. We flew into the capital, Reykjavik, and were then picked up from the main bus stop and taken to the Eldhestars farm Vellir which is situated in the heart of Iceland‘s south-western countryside close to the town Hveragerði, one of Iceland’s most popular tourist destinations nestled between volcanic mountains in a green valleys with steaming hot springs. We spent four days riding across the most dramatic landscape including treeless countryside, through marshes,[…]

Costa Rica adventure from mountain to surf

I’ve always wanted to visit Costa Rica and last October spent just over three weeks on the trip of a lifetime riding horses through the rainforest, surfing in warm waters, white-water rafting past the most beautiful landscape, zip-lining across the rainforest canopy and seeing some of the most incredible and exotic wildlife I’ve ever seen. My plan was to experience as much as I could of this beautiful country and so booked a week in a ranch in Guanacaste, four days in a luxury eco-lodge in Limon near the Caribbean coast and then ten days at a beautiful resort on[…]

The magical world of England’s New Forest

By Jane Wynyard, August 27, 2013 The English countryside is more than just lovely walks in the countryside, nature and fresh air. It’s a place that takes me back to my childhood daydreams of  fairies, goblins, heroic knights, outlaws, legends, princes and princesses. Which is why I love the tiny village of Brockenhurst in the New Forest, Hampshire. It’s a place where you can let your imagination run wild. New Forest, which is more than a thousand years old, is a world of creatures, ancient woodlands, fascinating history, royalty, miles and miles of forest, and breath-taking country walks. And, most importantly,[…]

My week as a real Calamity Jane on a cattle drive in Montana

In my 20s, I worked as a news journalist at a regional paper called The Daily News in New Plymouth, New Zealand.   I earned the nickname Calamity Jane because every time I was on late duty, a major disaster happened – a gang shoot-out, an ammunitions warehouse on fire, capsized Korean fishing vessel, six car pile-up, a cyclone … you name it, I covered it.  The Chief Report would ring the police and fire brigade to warn them I was on late duty. It was that bad. But this story isn’t about my journalism days or the disasters I covered.  It’s a[…]
